mirandolina a hostel in florence around 1750: the impoverished marquese of forlipopoli and the nouveau riche earl of albafiorita are courting the intelligent and beautiful host mirandolina. also fabrizio the waiter, has a crush on her…
mirandolina enjoys the attentions of her admirers and skilfully leads them by the nose. the real challenge for her, however, is another guest: the misogynist cavaliere di ripafratta. with all the arts of feminine sophistication, she knows how to slowly but surely bring him down.
further turbulence is provided by two actresses, who are elegantly staged by fabrizio.
with this piece, first performed in 1752 in venice, goldoni has left the long tradition of commedia dell’arte and created a new, original form of comedy. the omission of the masks allows the actors a more nuanced character representation of their roles. in addition to the man / woman theme, the changing social structure is also addressed: the aspiring middle class is asserting itself vis-à-vis the traditional nobility, and the emancipation of women is becoming more important.
